Estate sale, consignment, or donation? How to choose

May 28, 2026 · 5 min read · By Eric Breslin, M.A.

The right channel depends on volume, value, and how much time you have before closing. Mixing channels almost always nets more than committing to one.

When an estate sale makes sense

Estate sale companies typically take thirty to fifty percent of gross and need a full house to be worth their setup. They shine when the home is still furnished and the timeline allows a two to three week lead.

When consignment or online resale wins

A few high value pieces such as mid century furniture, quality rugs, jewelry, or firearms usually earn more through a specialist consignor than in a driveway sale.

When donation is simply the better trade

If a category would net two hundred dollars and cost three weekends of family energy, donate it, keep the receipt, and spend that energy on the move.
