Independent living, assisted living, and memory care: the real differences

May 6, 2026 · 6 min read · By Eric Breslin, M.A.

The brochures blur together quickly. Here is the practical difference between the three most common options, written the way we explain it at a kitchen table.

Independent living

Private apartments, meals, housekeeping, transportation, and activities, with no hands on personal care. It suits someone who is safe on their own but tired of maintaining a house and feeling isolated. In the Denver metro, expect roughly 3,000 to 5,500 dollars a month depending on the community and apartment size.

Assisted living

Everything above, plus daily help with bathing, dressing, medication management, and mobility. Care is usually priced in tiers on top of the base rent, which is why two families touring the same community can be quoted very different numbers. Denver metro pricing commonly lands between 4,500 and 8,000 dollars a month all in.

Memory care

A secured environment with staff trained in dementia care, structured routines, and higher staffing ratios. It is appropriate when wandering, sundowning, or safety risk is present. Expect a premium of roughly 1,000 to 2,000 dollars a month over comparable assisted living.

Choose for eighteen months from now

Choosing purely for today's needs often means moving again within two years. We look at the likely trajectory and favor communities that can absorb a change in care level without another move.
